Imagine traveling down the road, looking forward to running your horses like every weekend, when in just a flash of seconds everything you’ve ever known about life is flipped on it’s head.
That’s what happened to five members of the Schwab/Collier family, on their way to a show in May. A front truck tire blew out, causing them to lose control of their vehicle, which flew up an embankment and into a tree. Mother Cindy and son Trey were most seriously injured in the accident. Cindy is now in a rehabilitation center and Trey is also making small steps to recovery, according to sister Tena Collier.
Their horses were stuck in the trailer, at first trying to kick their way out. Eventually they too were rescued and are recovering, as well.
In response to this tragic accident that could have happened to any one of us traveling down the road each week, the Ohio barrel racing community (and truly barrel racers around the country) are joining together to help this family in their time of need. Cowgirl Expressions created a Web site to host an online auction in order to raise money for the family’s medical bills, where local barrel racers and friends have donated everything from free shoeing jobs to colt training and vacations. Check out the jewelry, bits and gifts there, as well. There’s something for everyone, and the site is still accepting donations for auction items, so there should be plenty of great things to go around.
Check out the auction site and get ready to bid once bidding opens. The money will go to the medical bills of the family so they can concentrate on recovery and not money.
